South Korea Adventure #20- Sports Challenge…John VS Jeff

This last week has been super busy. I finished my job and had to move out of my apartment. Two weeks ago we shot this sports challenge video. It took close to twenty hours to edit it, so it took two weeks to get the video out. I am glad it’s done now. We competed in seven events to see who was the champion. Over all it was a super fun day.

Enjoy the video!

South Korea Adventure #19- Journey to the Big Hand.. Homigot 호미곶

This was the last ride of the year. It has been pretty cold at night. I love to ride; it’s one of my biggest passions in life. This riding season was pretty good. I rode over 12,000 km. I figure I have ridden about 30,000km in Korea now. Korea is a great place to ride. The country is small so it is easy to get around. The smaller highways are used less, so the traffic is usually light. This season I got to redo some of my favorite rides. So for the final ride we decided to just ride and not stop too much. We still ended up riding a bit at night. It was cold but bearable. When we started to come back the sun was starting to set. The sky was red. Everything felt great and connected. That is why I love to ride. Later as it was dark we rode past some pagodas that were lit up. We were down a desolate stretch of highway. An hour later we were back in Busan. It felt good to get back in the city.

South Korea Adventure #18- Yangsan 양산

We headed out to Yangsan, which I guess technically is a suburb of Busan. It is on the subway line. I have ridden through several times but have never tried to do anything there before. As it’s getting cold we decided a short ride would be better. Also we had a third rider with us. It was first time to ride in South Korea. Our day started off slow, but we ended up going to Tongdosa first. It’s one of the more popular Buddhist temples. We ate at a restaurant across from the temple. It was really good. We had this dish of ginger root that was prepared with a spicy sauce. It was really delicious. At the temples I usually take pictures of the signs that have English information. Maybe I will use it later when I do some voiceover for the video. Sometimes I don’t read the signs till I am editing the video. This time I ended up learning a lot. On the way in we thought that Tongdosa was maybe popular because it was easy to get to. You don’t have to climb the side of a mountain to get there.

South Korea Adventure #17- Jirisan National Park 지리산

I have wanted to go to Jirisan for awhile now. I had marked it as a trip tp do for awhile. My original plan was to stay a night out there and make it a weekend. That did not workout, but we managed to get to the mountain by just after 1pm. We has stopped in Uiryeong for lunch. there was an election going on. So there was canditates everywhere, people dancing and the cow. Later we saw the cow in the market, which is the opening of the video. The hiking was great. After leaving Jirisan we rode to Jinju. On the way I stupidly ran out of gas. We had to go back and get some gas. From Jinju we got back to Busan in an hour and a half. We really rode fast. It is about 120km. With a couple spot through some towns. We go lucky with some green lights and only hit one traffic jam, which lasted for about 5km. I also know a shortcut. There is a bridge that lets you cut around Masan. You are not actually supposed to go over by motorcycle.

South Korea Adventure #16- Cheongdo 청도

We headed out to Cheongdo. It is about 40km south of Daegu. It is famous for bullfighting. Korean bullfighting features two bulls and the first time I went rode through Cheongdo I came face to face with a bull. Still I have not seen bullfighting yet. Even though they have a huge bullfighting arena in Cheongdo, it is only open for one weekend in the spring for their annual bullfighting festival. The ride out there is pretty easy. Most of the road is pretty flat and straight. You do go through Miryang which I think is fairly nice. The day was good though. We got to check out some cool stuff. Props to John, as it was his idea to go to the wine tunnel. I was not really that keen on it, but it ended up being a cool thing to check out.

Enjoy the video and “Keep Moving”,

Jeff Martinez

South Korea Adventure #15- Uiryeong 의령

I have travelled to a lot of places in South Korea. So now I am tending to go to more and more lesser know spots. Once again I had a great day. The last few trip have felt funner than most of the trips I have done. The video is also getting much better. I went back and looked at some older video the other day. I could see points where the videos have gotten much better. I feel that this another one of those times. I think this last video is a real jump up. I also got some recognition for my latest video and was names September filmmaker of the month at Trip Films. The site is a great place to check out travel video. Also it has me on the front page so it must be pretty fantastic! http://www.tripfilms.com/ Hope you enjoy the video!

South Korea Adventure #14- The DMZ

To be honest I am not a big fan of Tours. I usually try to avoid them at all costs, unless there is no choice. The best tour I have ever been on is the one to Alcatraz. If you go to San Francisco you have to go, it is just awesome. My first tour in Korea was to the DMZ. Obviously it is something to go to if you spend time in South Korea. It is a one of a kind of experience. I can best describe it as surreal. On the one hand it is a tour. So you have expected to go to some run of the mill tourist attraction. That is where it gets surreal; there is no tourist attraction, only the border. On the other side one of the least known countries in the world. Most of the tour you realize that you are going from places of sadness to sadness. The 4km wide border that cuts Korea in half is this ongoing scar and reminder of unresolved issues and lot of destruction. It is hard to know what to feel or think, being in the middle of it.
