The 2015 Korea Queer Culture Festival has decided to hold the opening ceremony over Youtube this year due to worries of MERS.

Although organizers of the festival worked hard to have the opening ceremony in City Hall, they stressed that participants health and safety are their number one concern. In order to prevent any spreading of the disease, the Korean government has recommended cancelling any large public events.

The closing ceremony is scheduled to broadcast for an hour over Youtube with events continuing throughout the month of June. The organizing committee will be holding the even in City Hall, but it looks like they want participants to take part online.

Personally, I find all of this hullabaloo to be ridiculous. While MERS could perhaps become a serious issue, as of now it is contained and pretty much everyone in this country is much more likely to die in a car accident than contract the disease. Plus, crazy Christian groups have already said that “God” sent MERS to cancel the Queer Culture Festival. This is just going to fuel their flames. With this news, the impact of the opening ceremony (which was to have a fun party-like atmosphere) and the main event will have lost a lot of their steam.

There is no link to a Youtube page yet, but I imagine it will show up on the KQCF’s main page.

Happy pride!
