Some Korean-Inspired Haiku
by Dan Bosworth
Women harvesting
green shoots from burial mounds
with exacto knives.
A spider spins webs
between neon filaments
eight storeys up.
Soaked in dew
and morning sunlight,
picking wild raspberries.
Sipping miso soup
among tide pools, and watching
the fishing boats leave.
Faint ring of blue flame,
little campstove greets the dawn
over the East Sea.
Hiking up sea cliffs
toward Dragon Temple,
chasing the sunrise.
Offerings on stone
pedestals - The Buddha
must like tangerines.
A black dragonfly
flits by my sandaled feet
at Waterfall Temple.
Inside Lingxing Gates,
Vast stone courtyard - a lone boy
chasing dragonflies.
Little stone Buddha
sits at night in this park.
He’s after my ice cream!
Rainy construction site -
The mist on Geumjong Mountain
doesn’t mind the noise.
"Teacher, look at this,"
five-year-old arms flailing,
"I am octopus!"
Pick fresh green figs from
the sunny temple courtyard.
Rinse in cold stream. Eat.
Jiri Mountain meadow
surrounds a hermit’s thatched house.
Butterflies mating.
Spiny chestnut husks
strewn across the mountain path,
beneath October skies.
Sunset, Haeundae Beach.
Little girl with a box full
of seagull feathers.
