Ferry

by Sheila Windle Sept 18, 1997

Crossing the Sea of Japan, the boat slowly rocks.
Outside dark waves crash against the ship's hull;
then avalanche back out; snow white,
soaring over incoming surges; subsiding back into darkness.

The moon is close to full.  Chusok, 2 nights ago, was the actual full moon.
Tonight its harvest tinge still shows as it sits above a cloud, centered,
as if placed there; a pumpkin lamp on a cloudy shelf,
emitting sparkling motion across the water.

The moon appears close enough to touch, but remains out of rach,
undisturbed; one of nature's masterpieces.
A warm wind blowing my hair back, carresses my body and moves me inside.
Its strength takes me at a steady, gentle pace toward my destination.
It's spirit lifting me now and then, that I might dance over the waves
and feel the tingling ocean spray on my skin.

Csssshhhhh!!!...the waves are transformed on impact into brilliant whiteness,
then thrust outward over the darkness to seek new adventure.
