As last Monday was Buddha’s Birthday, we were given then day off to celebrate in any which way we saw fit. After much deliberation we settled on visiting the Busan Grand Children’s Park (where avid readers will know I was taken on a school field trip) to picnic, wander and perhaps visit a temple if the crowds weren’t too off-putting. I realise that this isn’t quite in the spirit of the day, but then I’m not Buddhist and really don’t like to queue.

We arrived, stocked up on kimbap, Pepsi Nex and various Korean snacks and made our way into the park. As I imagine everyone knows by now, Korea is BUSY on the weekends…especially so for anywhere offering the possibility of a hike. Man, do these guys love to hike. As we imagined they would be, the eating spots were full to bursting with Korean families enjoying the Universe’s most well-planned picnics.

Feeling self-aware, ill-prepared and a little inadequate we sat ourselves down amidst the crowd, devoured our meagre supplies and complained about the relative quality of Pepsi then dipped our toes in the freezing cold stream (because we felt we should) and pretended we weren’t at all jealous of the family next to us.

You can take the couple out of England…
