I found this article earlier this week and had a chance to read it tonight. Titled, in typically long academic style, En-gendering re-gendered romance of multiple lives: reincarnation in Bungee Jumping of Their Own, this article delves into the spiritual meanings in the pseudo gay love story found in 번지점프를 하다 starring the super hot Lee Byung Hun. If you haven’t seen the film yet, I definitely recommend it. And then read this article by Aaron Han Joon and Magnan Park. Here is the abstract:
Kim Dae Seung’s Bungee Jumping of Their Own advances a space and place for homosexuality within Korea’s contemporary homophobic and phallocentric social landscape by problematizing the issue of fixed gender identity and the rigid dichotomy dividing heterosexuality from homosexuality. The inclusion of popular Buddhism and the diegetic veracity of reincarnation transforms an otherwise orthodox heterosexual college romance between In-Woo and Tae-Hee in 1983 into a love affirming homosexual romance when Tae-Hee dies and is reincarnated into a male body as Hyun-Bin.
I just realized I never reviewed this film… I’ll try to do that later this week. Oh, and sorry that the link doesn’t provide you with a nice pretty PDF. It is readable though.
